The Spanish national team lost again in the last 16 of the World Cup in a penalty shootout, just like in Russia 2018. This time, 'la Roja' were out after Morocco held them 0-0 until the 120th minute, after which Bono was the star, saving two of Spain's three spot-kicks.
After the clash, Spain coach Luis Enrique was determined: "It's all my responsibility because I chose the first three penalty takers and the rest were decided by the players, we didn't even get to the fourth. Bono is a great goalkeeper when it comes to penalties and he was superb.
"I think football is a wonderful sport, but with a clear connotation that a team can win without attacking. I think we dominated the game, we would have liked to generate more chances. It cost us, we generated eleven shots, but only one on target. The penalties cost us, but I'm proud of my team, I'm sorry for those who couldn't play," he added.
He then recalled the encouragement of the Spanish fans in Qatar and apologised to all of them: "Unfortunately, we have given our all and we congratulate the team that win, I am sorry for the fans because they have given me their support and I am sorry for that.
Finally, he was also asked about his future at the helm of the Spanish national team or a possible goodbye: "This is not the right time. I'm looking forward to getting home and I suppose that from next week onwards, we'll talk about what might matter in the future".
