It has not been the best start to the season for Chelsea. The London side lost their second game of the season to a strong Southampton side who took all three points thanks to goals from Lavia and Armstrong.
The first half was hard fought. For the first few minutes Southampton kept possession of the ball and Chelsea struggled to create chances. However, as the minutes went by, the Blues started to improve and in the 23rd minute, Sterling scored the first goal of the game. Havertz found Mount inside the box and the Englishman passed to Sterling who was on the penalty spot. The former City man turned and beat Bazunzu with a shot at the near post.
The Saints were quick to respond. Just four minutes after the visitors' goal, Lavia scored the equaliser. Ward Prowse crossed from the corner, the Chelsea defence cleared the ball and Lavia received it on the edge of the box. The Belgian midfielder smashed it to the near post beating Mendy and tying the game.
Just when it looked like the first half was going to end in a draw, in injury time Armstrong managed to turn the result around. Perraud received the ball inside the box, crossed to the penalty spot where Armstrong, unmarked, beat Mendy with a shot across the face of goal to give Southampton the lead.
Thiago Silva managed to keep Chelsea alive in the 73rd minute. Ward-Prowse crossed from the corner and Salisu headed the ball in, and when it looked like it was going to be the home side's third goal the Brazilian centre-back cleared it over the goal line.
However, although the home side failed to score a third, the two first-half goals were enough to take all three points.
