Chelsea visit Valdebebas in the semi-finals of the 2020-21 Champions League. Real Madrid will play in their 30th semi-final after not being in the last four for two years in a row. They had been in the semis for eight straight seasons before that.
Real Madrid 1-0 Bayern Munich (2013-14)
Ancelotti's Real Madrid wanted to end their run of losing three semi-finals in a row. They faced Guardiola's Bayern, a team who were threatening to end that losing run. But Benzema's goal after 19 minutes was enough to travel to Germany with a 1-0 lead which is usually vital in knockout games. They won the return leg 0-4 and then beat Atletico in the final.
Juventus 2-1 Real Madrid (2014-15)
Real Madrid had won the 10th CL the year before that so there was less desperation to win this time. In any case, Ancelotti's side reached the semis, but this time they started poorly. Goals from Morata and Tevez meant they won 2-1 (Cristiano Ronaldo scored for Madrid). A 1-1 draw in the second leg meant Juve went through and prevented a Madrid-Barca final. They were beaten in the final by Barca.
Man City 0-0 Real Madrid (2015-16)
It was Zidane's first CL. The Frenchman reached the final after knocking out Pellegrini's Man City. They got a 0-0 at the Etihad which could have been even better had Jese not been denied by the post in the 71st minute. In the second leg, an own goal by Fernando gave them a 1-0 win. Once again, they beat Atletico in the final.
Real Madrid 3-0 Atletico Madrid (2016-17)
After losing two final, Atletico wanted revenge against their city rivals in the 2016-17 semis. But Real Madrid went through after a superb first leg display. Cristiano Ronaldo got a hat-trick (his last two goals were in the 73rd and 86th minutes) to give RM a 3-0 first leg lead. A 2-1 win for Atletico in the return was not enough and RM defeated Juventus in the final.
Bayern Munich 1-2 Real Madrid (2017-18)
Zidane's CL treble was confirmed the following season. Madrid were experts in first legs like the 0-3 win over Juve in the quarter-finals and a 1-2 win in the first leg in Germany over Jupp Heynckes' Bayern meant they won 1-2. Kimmich scored for Bayern while Marcelo and Asensio got Madrid's goals. Real Madrid got a 2-2 draw in a controversial second leg to progress to the final. They won their 13th CL after beating Liverpool and that turned out to be Ronaldo's final game for the club.
