Eden Hazard announced his retirement after failing to find another club following his release by Real Madrid. The 32-year-old endured an injury-plagued spell at Madrid after his 89-million-pound move from Chelsea in 2019, playing just 76 matches in all competitions across four seasons.
"You must listen to yourself and say stop at the right time. After 16 years and more than 700 matches played, I have decided to end my career as a professional footballer," Hazard said.
His former Chelsea teammate John Obi Mikel revealed in an interview that the ex-Belgium striker was offered a move to the Saudi league before retiring. However, he decided to turn down the offer of 50 million pounds to finish his career.
"[Hazard asked,] 'Should I go to Saudi Arabia, where I’m going to take a million a week and then what? I got about two or three offers to go to Saudi Arabia'.
"He said, 'Mikel, I’ve got a lot of money. You know how I live my life. I don’t spend too much money. So, I have money now to live with my family and to bring up [my children]'," Obi Mikel told the Rio Ferdinand 'Vibe with Five' podcast.
