The idea, put forward by the Spanish top division, has sparked outrage from almost all quarters since it was announced last month.
Talk of players going on strike, the Spanish FA not agreeing with it and the Spanish government having objections all make it seem unlikely that the game will now go ahead.
Now yet another major figure has come out against the move, the head of football's world governing body FIFA, Gianni Infantino.
"I think I would prefer to see a great MLS game in the US rather than La Liga being in the US," the FIFA president said about the potential game.
"In football, the general principle is that you play a "home" match at "home", and not in a foreign country."
A final announcement on the issue will be made at the end of September.
