In the first match of group B, Spain went up against the Netherlands in what pundits thought would be a routine win for the reigning champions. The result was quite the opposite.
Xabi Alonso drew first blood when he converted a penalty after 27 minutes to give his side the lead. Having won their last three major tournaments, Spain were the clear favourites and looked to be cruising.
In search of an equaliser, Daley Blind floated a stunning long range pass over the Spanish defence for striker Robin Van Persie to chase. Suddenly, the world stood still.
Like an elegant salmon swimming upstream, Van Persie leaped through the air and guided a masterful diving header beyond Iker Casillas to level the score.
Carrying their momentum into the second half, the 'Oranje' went on to slaughter the Spaniards, with Arjen Robben and Stefan de Vrij getting involved in a six-goal thriller.
The game finished 5-1 to the Netherlands who danced a lap of honour around the stadium after the whistle.
