Things go bad to worse for Wigan. After having their relegation from the Championship confirmed, the club have just been sanctioned by the English Football League.
Last week, the English side had already had four points taken off them (for next year) after not paying their players on time for the fifth time this season. But on Friday, the club were hit with another four-point deduction.
Therefore, the EFL have taken the decision because the Latics have not got, as of the 24th May, the necessary funds to pay their wage bill.
"Following the failure to ensure that an amount equal to 125% of the Club’s forecast monthly wage bill was deposited in a designated Club account by Wednesday 24 May, as per the order of an Independent Disciplinary Commission, Wigan Athletic Football Club has been deducted a further four points and will now start the 2023/24 season on minus eight points (-8)."
