Weir is currently one of manager Alex McLeish's trusty lieutenants, and the assistant manager has not held back in his recent criticism of the players available for Scotland selection.
Scotland boss McLeish has come in for heavy criticism in recent months for tinkering with his team and formation selections. However, right hand man Weir thinks that this is no fault of the manager, and the blame should lie with the 'weak minded' players at his disposal.
McLeish has experimented with a back three for the past few games, in order to accommodate Liverpool's Andy Robertson and Celtic's Kieran Tierney in the starting XI. Yet, after initial success against Albania, the move was criticised after the previous defeat away in Israel.
Nevertheless, David Weir, who won 69 caps for Scotland, has insisted that tactics are not there to win games, players are.
Weir told the assembled media: "You look at the best teams and they change formation within the games, with the ball, without the ball,' said the 48-year-old former defender. "Formations are sometimes used as a stick to beat the coach with but he picks that formation to win the game."
The assistant manager continued: "'He (McLeish) picked that formation and it beat Albania then he picked it and we lost to Israel. Was it the formation that lost to Israel? Or the players? In my mind, it wasn't the formation. It was the players who lost the game."

This is not the first occasion that Weir has questioned the mentality of the Scottish international players; he questioned the desire of striker Leigh Griffiths last month when he opted to withdraw from the squad to work on his fitness.
All eyes are now firmly fixed on coach McLeish, whose tenure is quickly being reduced to whether he can successfully solve the Robertson-Tierney conundrum at left back.
Having only won twice in eight games at the start of his reign, a positive performance (and result) this month, will be crucial to stave off the circling vultures.
Up first, the Scots travel to face Albania on Saturday, and then return to Hampden Park, to host Israel next Tuesday night .
