Andrew Redmayne took Australia to the World Cup. He came on in the final minutes of the second half of extra-time to be the goalkeeper for the penalty shootout against Peru. The goalkeeper was the hero and he saved the sixth penalty to book their place in Qatar. He made the headlines after dancing around before each penalty.
He was also in the news because he moved the bottle Pedro Gallese was using with information about the Aussie penalty takers on it. That meant the Peruvian did not have that important information at the most important moment. The Peruvian spoke to 'Cadena N' on the game in Doha and had the odd dig at Redmayne.
"It will be very difficult for the pain to go away. The only way that will go is for the World Cup qualifiers to start again and try again to qualify for the World Cup. With the help of fans and teammates, we'll go forward. This doesn't end here," he said.
"Redmayne? We shouldn't talk a lot about him. He saved a penalty, just like we did and then we hit the post with one. He didn't save all five penalties. We shouldn't make a big issue out of it," Gallese continued. He also played down the bottle incident: "I'd already studied them, the bottle and the piece of paper were just an extra bit of help, I already had it all in my head. I don't think we should make a big issue about that or keep talking about the keeper. We're mentioning him so much that even he could think he's a great goalkeeper. In any case, I wish him the best at the World Cup."
