Traditionally, the Spanish Super Cup saw the La Liga champions take on the Copa del Rey winners, but to make it more interesting, it was changed to a fourt team format. Toni Kroos' Real Madrid have been the beneficiaries of this format and he admitted that its a curious one on his podcast 'Einfach mal luppen'.
"What did we do to take part? Well, obviously not much because we neither won the league nor the cup. But here we are. Two years ago, the first time the Super Cup was played with four teams, we did not win the league or cup and we ended up winning the Super Cup. What can I say to you? To be honest, I think the organisers want us to be in it," he said.
Just before that, Felix had began the conversation sarcastically saying: "It's clear a Spanish Super Cup has to take place in Saudi Arabia. Where is it suppose to take place if not?" Toni replied: "No doubt about it." Toni then explained why he arrived late to the press conference ahead of the semi-final.
"The airport bus got stuck in the sand, that's why it arrived later than it should. They also checked on our arrival that we were all vaccinated. That doesn't only happen in Australia, it happens here as well," he said. That was a shot at Novak Djokovic who is in the spotlight after travelling to Australia despite not being vaccinated when he needed to be.
Another curious aspect is that Kroos admitted that since he lives in Spain, he arrives later for training: "I always tried to be extra puntual, but I admit that I've started appearing a minute before the coach speaks. Before that, I was arriving five minutes early. I used to be the last to arrive for Germany and the first at Real Madrid. Now I reach a minute early and I'm still always among the first three at Real Madrid.
