On Tuesday, Villarreal knocked German giants, Bayern Munich out of the Champions League in the quarter finals. They will now face either Liverpool or Benfica in their sixth ever European semi-final, their second in Europe's top competition. They will hope to improve their form of currently having lost four of said semi-finals.
The Yellow Submarine will be looking to repeat last year's events when they won their first ever European trophy. They overcame Manchester United in the final of the Europa League on penalties after getting past Arsenal in the semi-finals.
Their first appearance in a European semi-final was in the 2003/04 UEFA Cup where they crossed paths with Valencia. They were knocked out at the Mestalla via a Miguel Ángel Ferrer Mista penalty, after a first leg goalless draw at the Madrigal.
Later, in the 2005/06 edition of the Champions League, they were also knocked out by an aggregate score of 1-0. This time, they lost to Arsenal at Highbury in the first leg, and could only manage a goalless draw at home in the second.
The most crushing defeat that Villarreal suffered in a semi-final was at the hands of Porto in the 2010/11 Europa League. On that occasion, the Portuguese side thumped the Spaniards 5-1 in the first leg to put the tie beyond doubt. However, that game did mark Villarreal's first European semi-final goal after Cani netted for the Yellow Submarine.
Their most recent loss was also a heavy one. It came during the 2015/16 season against Liverpool who beat them 3-0 despite the Spanish side going into the second leg with a 1-0 aggregate advantage.
