The South Americans have proven to be one of the most discliplined teams at the World Cup to date, conceding just one goal in their four games so far.
For 40 minutes of their last-eight game, that trend looked set to continue, only for Varane to find the all-important opener.
Rodrigo Bentancur brought down Corentin Tolisso 30 yards out, with Antoine Griezmann tasked with swinging in the dead ball.
The Atletico Madrid star did just that, after a stutter in the run-up, with his delivery perfect for Varane to steal a march on his man and flick home a header from 10 yards.
Fernando Muslera never looked like getting close to it and whilst it was just Varane's third goal for his country, it could yet be by far his most important.
