Real Madrid, who missed a penalty earlier on, were close to getting a non-existent penalty, for a foul on Eden Hazard. Elche were thankful for the existence of the VAR so that referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea could change his decision.
The referee gave a penalty after a foul by Helibelton Palacios on Eden Hazard. The Belgian fell when he tried to get to the by-line and put the ball into the six yard box.
Hazard received a little bit of contact from Diego Gonzalez, but definitely not enough to go down. Just afterwards, he clashed knees with Palacios and that made him go to ground.
Referee De Burgos Bengoetxea quickly pointed to the spot, but it was not a penalty. After seeing it twice on the monitor, the referee took the penalty away.
Later on, VAR was in Real Madrid's favour as it spotted a handball by Pere Milla and Luka Modric converted the spot kick.
