Manchester United had somewhat of a mountain to climb coming into this Champions League second leg what with a number of injuries meaning Solskjaer's side were depleted against PSG who had only lost two of their last 50 matches in all European competitions.
Solskjaer started with Rashford and Lukaku up front in the hope that the Belgian international could provide some brute power through the middle for United.
It worked a treat as he opened the scoring at the Parc des Princes after just two minutes! A dodgy back pass from Kehrer allowed Lukaku in and he stayed on his feet well to tap it home from a tight angle.
PSG, however, did not let this get the better of them and began to apply pressure. It paid off almost immediately as Mbappe fired a menacing shot across the face of goal for Bernat to tap home with ease. It was all level at the Parc des Princes as PSG started dominating the game with a total of 81% possession after 25 minutes.
As we know well, statistics often mean nothing in football and PSG's hard work was undone by a Buffon blunder in goal. He couldn't hang onto Rashford's deflected shot and Lukaku was there to pick up the pieces and smash it home for the visiting side who weren't going down without a fight.
United went into the break level after enjoying a period of dominance towards the end of the first-half. It was PSG however who claimed the majority of first-half possession and Tuchel will have been wondering how his side didn't manage to make it count.
Both teams started the second-half strongly with United posting a few attempts on goal to challenge Buffon. Di Maria thought he had scored for PSG but the linesman's flag was up after Mbappe flicked the ball on from the left channel.
Meunier came on for Julian Draxler and had an immediate impact as he changed PSG's dynamic down the right flank. He continued to threaten United's defence but the likes of Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw were able to deal with his attempts to put a cross in.
It was largely PSG who dominated the second-half, much like the first, and towards the end of regulation time the home side threatened De Gea's goal twice. Once with Meunier who found himself at a very tight angle but managed to get a shot away which De Gea batted away. The second came with Mbappe as he charged towards De Gea who slipped while trying to make the challenge.
Mbappe unfortunately slipped himself but this did not dampen the momentum of the attack as Bernat picked up the ball but could only clatter the post for PSG.
It seemed as though the second-half would be goalless but, unsurprisingly, VAR had a part to play in awarding a controversial, late penalty for Manchester United after the ball looked to strike Kimpembe's arm in the PSG box. The Parc des Princes was stunned as Marcus Rashford stepped up to score what would be a game-changing, and consequently, a competition-changing penalty.
This left PSG distraught and deflated with just minutes left to salvage their Champions League title hopes. The score read 3-3 on aggregate, meaning United would go through on away goals, so PSG were desperate to score in any way they could.
A couple of close attempts later, including a potential penalty shout of their own denied by the referee, and PSG kissed goodbye to their spot in the Champions League quarter-finals. Manchester United managed the seemingly impossible by overturning a 2-0 defeat in the first-leg to book their place in the next round.
We will anticipate the extensive debates over the role of VAR in modern football, as it reared its head again to produce a major upset in Paris.
