According to 'the Daily Mail', United scouts have been closely monitoring the 19-year-old of late and have identified him as a potential option to strengthen their U23 squad.
An England U20 international, Tavernier is highly rated at Middlesbrough and was even invited to train with the England senior squad back in September.
Tavernier has made 11 appearances for the Championship side this season, scoring three goals.
An energetic left-footer, Tavernier started out as a left back, but has largely been deployed as a winger during his time with the Boro first team.
The youngster spent time on loan in League One with MK Dons last season to allow him regular minutes, but injury limited him to just eight appearances.
Born in Leeds, Tavernier initially spent time at Newcastle's academy, before switching to their north-east rivals in 2013.
Tavernier is the brother of Rangers captain and Newcastle academy product James Tavernier.
