Unai Simon and Agirrezabala renewed by Athletic

Goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala has extended his contract with Athletic, which was due to expire in 2025, by two years to 2027, the Bilbao club said on Friday. His new contract also comes with "a unilateral option to extend it until 2029".

Agirrezabala is the usual La Liga understudy to Unai Simon, although he is Ernesto Valverde's goalkeeper of choice for the Copa del Rey.

This contract extension comes on top of Unai Simon's one a week ago, when the Spanish national team's first-choice goalkeeper renewed his contract until 2029 without a termination clause. Athletic are thus assured of having their two goalkeepers, in whom Valverde has great confidence for the coming seasons.

Agirrezabala has "accepted the economic approach proposed" by the club, “based on a salary structure with a variable component", which will be linked to the achievement of certain objectives.
