Trippier's message to Doherty that convinced him to join Atleti

One of the surprises of the last transfer window was the arrival of Matt Doherty at Atletico Madrid. The former Tottenham full-back joined the Madrid side until the end of the current season in a move that caught everyone by surprise.

The Irishman arrived at the Metropolitano and it was thanks, in part, to former 'Colchoneros' and Spurs player Kirian Trippier. The England international sent him a message that convinced him to join the team currently coached by Diego Pablo Simeone.

"Once I got the notification that this was possible, it was hard to turn down the opportunity to come and play for this club. Just from what I heard from people like Trippier, I am very excited. The way he said Simeone trains and the way the players play, I realised that I would really enjoy myself here," he said.

Then the Englishman added: "I spoke to him. About how much he will enjoy the defence and the whole city and stuff like that, to give him an idea and help him. It's important he has someone to lean on, it's not easy to go abroad and get out of your comfort zone, but it was an amazing experience and something I'll remember forever.
