Toronto FC announced on Friday the signing of Spanish footballer Victor Vazquez, who will return to the team which won the MLS Cup in 2017.
"I'm very happy to return home," the midfielder said in a statement released by the Canadian side. "I'm looking forward to seeing you all again and playing against all of you on those special nights at BMO Field. We're going to enjoy ourselves and send the club back to the very top, which is where they belong," he said.
Vazquez, 35, returns to Toronto after two years at LA Galaxy, led by Javier Hernandez. In those two seasons, Vazquez scored five goals and provided 11 assists in 57 appearances.
LA Galaxy, who also have Spanish footballer Riqui Puig, lost 3-2 in the semi-finals of the Western Conference against bitter rivals Los Angeles FC (LAFC).
"We are excited to have a player like Victor join the team and reinforce our midfield depth," Toronto coach Bob Bradley said. "He is a talented player with a great understanding of the game, an excellent passer and brings experience and creativity to our midfield," he added.
Vazquez went through one of his best moments as a professional footballer at Toronto between 2017 and 2019 with 18 goals and 28 assists in 65 matches. The Spaniard was key to the Canadian side's success in 2017 when they won the MLS Cup, MLS Supporters' Shield and the Canadian Championship. Vazquez came through the Barcelona academy and has also played in countries such as Belgium, Mexico and Qatar.
