On three occasions the Spanish giants have managed to edge out Bayern Munich at the knockout stages, and on all three the current champions emerged victorious at the end of the competition.
It all began in the 1999/2000 season. That year, Germans and Spaniards were placed in the same group, with the former winning both games. They met again in the semi-finals, in which results of 2-0 and 2-1 awarded Real Madrid a place in the final in Paris. The 'Blancos' then went on to beat Valencia 3-0.
In 2001, an aggregate result of 3-2 in favour of Real Madrid in the quarter-finals, set them on their way to the final at Hampden Park. The Spaniards met another German team, Bayern Leverkusen, with another victory coming their way thanks to Zidane's fabulous volley making it 2-1.
The last time it happened, and possibly the most humiliating of times for the Bavarians, was in the 2013/14 season, with Ancelotti as Real's boss. 1-0 and 4-0 results set Real Madrid firmly on their way to lifting the Champions League trophy for the tenth time.
