David de Gea (Spain)
He allowed Cristiano Ronaldo's straightforward shot to slip through his fingers to hand Portugal their second goal during a thrilling 3-3 draw.
Mats Hummels (Germany)
Along with defensive partner Jerome Boateng, Hummels was constantly exposed by a fast Mexico attack who secured a shock 1-0 victory over the holders.
Davinson Sanchez (Colombia)
The centre-back had an outstanding club season for Tottenham but that didn't translate against Japan where he consistently struggled to deal with the Japanese threat. His error in the opening stages led to Carlos Sanchez's red card and ultimately to Colombia's defeat.
Kyle Walker (England)
Employed in an unfamiliar centre-back position, Walker showed his inexperience by giving away a needless penalty against Tunisia. Thankfully, Harry Kane saved the day by grabbing a last-minute winner.
Carlos Sanchez (Colombia)
Who knows what was going through the midfielder's mind when he deliberately handled the ball in the box in just the 3rd minute of the game. He was rightfully sent off and left Colombia a goal and man down with 87 minutes still on the clock.
Lucas Biglia (Argentina)
He was tasked with linking the play to the fearsome attack of Di Maria, Messi and Aguero but instead produced a flat, pointless performance against Iceland, allowing the minnows to mount a surprise 1-1 draw.
Raheem Sterling (England)
Sterling was part of a terrific attack during the opening 30 minutes against Tunisia but his terrible finishing meant the 'Three Lions' didn't capitalise and allowed their opposition to gain a foothold in the game.
Angel Di Maria (Argentina)
Should have loved going up against an Iceland side there for the taking but, in reality, didn't offer anything in attack throughout the game. Thoroughly disappointing...
Aziz Bouhaddouz (Morocco)
It was his unfortunate own goal at the death that handed Iran a 1-0 victory in what was already a tough group given the presence of Spain and Portugal.
Luis Suarez (Uruguay)
Had ample chances against a Salah-less Egypt but failed to take advantage of a single one. His wastefulness nearly cost Uruguay a victory until Jose Gimenez stepped up with a last-minute winner.
Lionel Messi (Argentina)
He carries the weight of the nation on his shoulders and maybe the pressure got too much for the Barcelona forward against Iceland - missing an important penalty as 'La Albiceleste' dropped two valuable points.
