Tarkowski stands down from standby list

The central defender was rewarded for his fine season with a place on the fringes of Gareth Southgate's squad, but Burnley have revealed that he will not be able to fulfil his obligation. 

He wil have surgery in the coming days on a hernia, ruling him out until the start of next season. 

"Tarkowski, who earned his debut England cap in March, had harboured hopes of travelling to Russia this summer along with team mate Nick Pope," Burnely said in a statement. 

"However, after managing an ongoing groin issue and, following assessment in recent days, it has been been decided that the 28-year-old requires surgery instead."
