With both teams already qualified for the round of 16, Uruguay's clash with Russia was all about deciding who would finish top of Group A, and the South American side drew first blood in the fight.
Luis Suarez, who has come in for a fair amount of criticism of late after a poor performance in Uruguay's opening game, hushed the doubters with a well executed goal from a set piece.
The home side conceded a free-kick ten minutes in, Gazinskiy bringing down Betancur on the edge of the box to earn himself a yellow card. Star man Suarez stepped up to take it, and instead of aiming over the wall, drilled it round the right side of the defenders.
The delivery caught both the wall and the keeper by surprise, and the ball flew into the bottom right corner, giving Uruguay the lead and taking Suarez's tally for the tournament to two.
