Starting XI of Europe's most costly bench-warmers

Goalkeeper: Jasper Cillessen (Barcelona, €13m)

He arrived at Barcelona under the knowledge that Ter Stegen would be the first-option goalkeeper. He has played Copa del Rey matches, one Champions League game and one LaLiga match.

Right-back: Daryl Janmaat (Watford, €8'9m)

When the Hornets signed the Dutch international from Newcastle they were hoping for better performances from the defender, who has barely played 1000 minutes this season.

Centre-back: Lorenzo Tonelli (Napoli, €10m)

He spent the first few months of the season on the bench, only to return to the starting lineup with two goals in his first two matches. In his third game, against AC Milan, he picked up an injury. 270 minutes this season.

Left-back: Jorge (Monaco, €​8'5m)

Monaco signed the young defender on the 30th of January. Two months later, he has only played 95 minutes in the French Cup. He has not enjoyed any Ligue 1 or Champions League football.

Central midfielder: Grzegorz Krychowiak (PSG, €33'6m)

Unai Emery asked expressly for the Polish footballer. He was surely hoping to be more important for the French team, only racking up around 1000 minutes in all competitions this season.

Central midfielder: Moussa Sissoko (Tottenham, €35m)

A much sought-after player last Summer, after a good season for Newcastle and being a key player for France. Spurs ended up paying big for the versatile midfielder, but Pochettino has only granted him just over 1000 minutes in four different competitions.

Attacking midfielder: Renato Sanches (Bayern Múnich, €35m)

A dazzling season for Benfica, followed by Euro '16 victory with Portugal, earnt the 19-year-old a move to Bayern Munich. Since his arrival, Ancelotti has only given him 702 minutes.

Attacking midfielder: Sofiane Boufal (Southampton, €18'7m)

The Saints snatched him up from Lille but, having payed a considerable amount for the Frenchman, expected more than 800 minutes in the Premier League, and less-than-average performances.

Forward: Gabriel Barbosa, 'Gabigol' (Inter, €29'5m)

He arrived at the Italian giants as one of the most promising talents from Brazil, but has only managed 153 minutes for the team. He is surprisingly effective, scoring one goal in the 81 minutes he has played in the Serie A.

Forward: Michy Batshuayi (Chelsea, €39m)

Another resounding failure. He has not convinced Antonio Conte, who has granted him 497 minutes in all competitions. At least he has managed to score in all of them...

Forward: Paco Alcácer (Barcelona, €30m)

Competing for a spot against the 'MSN' was never going to be easy. However, as the usual replacement for the attacking players he has not done well. He scored his first goal in December, and has managed three in a total of 866 minutes played.
