Manchester United began the game trying to take control over their opponents, which they eventually did. A good spell from the home side saw them come close to Robles' goal with relative ease, however not taking their chances.
Everton fought off the pressure and managed to hold the ball for about 10 minutes which ultimately lead to their goal. Williams flicked the ball at the near post, for Jagielka to improvise and finish through De Gea's legs at the back post.

Mourinho's team managed to recompose themselves, but the Toffees were happy to sit back for the rest of the half and defend their lead. Blind and Herrera came close to equalising, but Robles or the crossbar stood in their way.
The second half began the way the first ended, with the visitors defending deep and breaking through Lukaku, who caused trouble for Rojo. Manchester United created some chances, but overall it was a solid defensive display from Koeman's side.
It looked like Everton would achieve an important victory at Old Trafford, but it all changed in the third minute of added time. Shaw shot at goal from the edge off the box, and Williams handed the goal-bound ball. The referee pointed to the spot and sent Williams off. Ibrahimovic then sent Robles the wrong way to avoid a costly defeat at home.
