Six years ago Southampton were facing the likes of Dagenham and Redbridge and Tranmere Rovers in League One, and tonight they've beaten a European giant in an albeit weak Inter Milan side.
The Saints got off to a lively start and appeared unfazed by the occasion with Jay Rodriguez and Nathan Redmond having early chances.
However, against the run of play, Inter Milan took the lead when Inter's controversial skipper Mauro Icardi poked home from close range.
On the stroke of half-time, Southampton had the perfect opportunity to get back into the game when they were awarded a penalty. Before the spot kick was taken, the Inter Milan were probably lucky not to have Candreva sent off when he raised his arms to Saints youngster McQueen, but the Inter man was only given a booking.
Tadic's subsequent penalty was well saved by Handanovic and the Saints continued to trail at the break.
Southampton came out brightly once again and finally got a deserved equalizer through skipper on the night Virgil Van Dijk who scored from close range on 65 minutes.
Less than five minutes later, Southampton had their winning goal which came with more than a stroke of luck. Dusan Tadic's cross from the left bounced up to Inter defender Nagatomo who ended up kneeing the ball into the net.
Southampton survived late Inter pressure to hang on to the three points and to mark a magnificent rise from the third tier of English football.
