The arrest of Kike Salas, and his subsequent release, for an alleged case of deliberately earning yellow cards in La Liga in order to favour bets placed by relatives has been the news of the day in Spanish football. Sevilla, the club to which he belongs, prefer to wait for the courts to rule on possible sanctions.
"Sevilla, after the events that occurred on Tuesday in relation to our player Kike Salas, want to show their total respect for the judicial proceedings, and want to emphasise their respect for the principle of the presumption of innocence of our player," they said in a statement.
The club also "condemn any fraudulent conduct in the world of sport and in particular those that may affect the integrity of the competition".
Kike Salas was arrested on Tuesday by the National Police after being deliberately earning yellow cards during several matches in the final stretch of last season.
The defender allegedly did this so that people close to him could profit from sports betting. Kike Salas saw 7 yellow cards in the last 8 games he played in La Liga.
La Liga, reported ‘COPE’, is going to take part in the case as a private prosecutor and recalls that all players are obliged to attend integrity workshops given by the competition itself.
