The forward sustained a shoulder injury during the Champions League final and was a major doubt to feature in the upcoming World Cup.
However, in the weeks since the problem, everything looked positive that Salah would play in Egypt's first game, with head coach Hector Cuper even confident of his starting place against Uruguay.
That hasn't materialised though with Salah missing out. Although it remains it be seen whether the Liverpool star will make an appearance from the substitutes bench.
Instead, Egypt went with a starting line-up of: El Shenawy; Fathy, Gabr, Hegazy, Abdel Shafy; Elneny, Hamed, El Said; Warda, Treziguet, Mohsen.
