The Bayern Munich midfielder scored his first goal for the German national side after just two minutes, powering home from long range.
As the hosts cleared a cross from the right, Germany recovered the ball and it was played back to the former Hoffenheim man who lashed home right-footed with a little help from the upright from fully thirty yards.
That was the first goal Michael O'Neil's side had conceded in qualifying at home, not that there was much that could have been done to stop it.
