Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that one of their best footballers will say goodbye. What was an open secret has been announced by his coach, Marco Rose. The German coach said that Axel Witsel will not continue at Signal Iduna Park.
The defensive midfielder will leave as a free agent as his contract will not be renewed, as his coach said in a press conference: "Axel Witsel is a great player. He played a lot of important games for us. Nevertheless, we've decided not to extend his contract."
"We also said goodbye to him on Saturday," he added ahead of the game against Hertha Berlin in front of their fans. At the age of 33, the footballer has been linked with MLS clubs ahead of his next move. Los Angeles Galaxy and LAFC were those to be most linked with him.
Witsel managed to stand out at Zenit before making the move to the Chinese league. After two seasons in Asian football, Borussia Dortmund got hold of him in 2018 following the World Cup in Russia. After four seasons in which he has made 144 appearances, the midfielder will say goodbye.
