A sell-out crowd at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata welcomed the youngsters as they walked out to the 2017 Under-17 World Cup final. A stage for the future stars of Spain and England to show what they are capable of in front of 67,000 onlookers.
In the rematch of this summer's Under-17 European Championship final, which Spain won on penalties, England sought revenge and attempted to emulate the Under-20 heroes who lifted the World Cup in June.
And it was almost a dream start for the Young Lions as Gibbs-White exchanged passes with Brewster before drawing a good save from Fernandez after 50 seconds. It was the first of a string of chances for England, who were comfortable in possession and looked threatening with every approach to Spain's area.
However, Spain opened the scoring with their second attack, when Miranda's cross found Cesar and England made a hash of clearing it. Gomez got the slightest of touches to guide the ball past Anderson.
The situation tested England's ability to cope and they showed great maturity in putting their nerves to one side. They responded brilliantly, driving forward with menace. The game entered an agitated period with chances at either end and, surely enough, Spain banged in a second. Cesar did well inside the box to work the ball for Gomez to volley into the far corner.
However, England kept their composure and piled the chances on Fernandez's goal. Hudson-Odoi rattled the upright with a stunning effort before Brewster reduced the deficit by heading in a cross from Sessegnon. The Liverpool youngster clinched his eighth goal of the tournament at the stroke of half-time to pile pressure on the Spaniards.
After the break, England were immediately on the front foot, as Spain began to disappear from the fixture. Sessegnon made another surging run down the right flank and squared the ball for Gibbs-White to tap into the net. England equalised deservedly, but they did not sit back.
The comeback was completed by Manchester City starlet Foden, who latched onto the low cross from Hudson-Odoi, who produced another superb galloping run down the left. Spain had a huge chance when Garcia's header was cleared off the line by Sessegnon, before England sealed the turnaround with a fourth.
Again, Hudson-Odoi proving a nuisance in the left channel and Jaume was forced to haul down the winger, who then clipped in the resulting free-kick for Latibeaudiere to knock it back in at the back post. Centre-back Guehi swivelled in the six-yard box to fire home as Spain failed to clear their lines.
The Spaniards never gave in and desperately pushed forward in the final minutes, but were harshly punished when England hit them on the counter-attack. Foden fired past Fernandez before being subsequently mobbed by his teammates as he wheeled away in celebration.
England earned a merited win with a truly special performance to outclass 'La Rojita' and add another title to fuel the growing hopes of English football fans across the country.
