A challenge which could have decided a Bundesliga title. Marco Reus was given a straight red just after the hour mark in the Ruhr derby and from then on, the stadium fell silent.
Dortmund, who had to win, did not start the match badly. One point off Bayern, a victory would have put Kovac's men, who play this Sunday, under pressure, for which the yellows went out with lots of hunger.
So much so that Gotze, after 15 minutes gave Dortmund the lead thanks to a brilliant assist from Sancho. But the home support was not enough for the home side to get the job done and Caliguri and Sane put Schalke 1-2 up.
The away side went into half-time with a one goal lead, but in the 60th minute, everything changed. Reus was given a straight red card for a very dangerous challenge from behind and he left Dortmund with 10. To make things worse, Caligiuri tucked away the resulting free-kick.
It was a bad decision, he went in late and it could cost Borussia Dortmund very dearly. It brings back memories of Steven Gerrard's fall which cost Liverpool the Premier League. Minutes afterwards, Wolf was also sent off and they were down to 9.
Favre's men pulled one back through Witsel in the 85th minute, but seconds later, Embolo killed it off. If Bayern beat Nuremberg on Sunday, Bayern would be four points clear with just nine left to play for.
