The European Super League is more alive than ever. Despute the fact it faced huge opposition back in April 2021 by most European clubs, the impulsors of the project have advanced with a new version of the competition.
That is what 'L'Equipe' reports. They say that both Madrid and Barcelona, the founders of the competition, have made alterations to the initial project: a more inclusive and open format for European clubs.
The cited source also says that these clubs have surveyed 50 European clubs to find out what type of competition they would prefer in European football if the Super League came to light. For example, the Belgian and Dutch leagues would be represented.
The idea is that it will no longer be a closed league, but more open. Clubs would qualify based on results. There would also be a rule saying that wage bills cannot be more than 55% of a club's budget.
For now, the founders are waiting for the European Court of Justice to give their verdict on whether clubs can participate in a competition away from UEFA. The decision will not be known until the spring.
It cannot be forgotten that there will be a new Champions League format in 2024 which will see places allocated on sporting merit. There will not be groups as everyone will be in one big group. On the Super League, the project would begin in 2025 if it ends up getting approved.
