Rangers open their pre-season with convincing win over Oxford

Rangers, who will look to dethrone Celtic in the Scottish Premiership next season, passed their first test of the pre-season with flying colours as they thrashed Oxford United 5-0.

Gerrard's side opened their account shortly after the quarter-hour mark as Daniel Candeias latched on to a good pass from Greg Stewart to fire home the opener.

Stewart, who arrived from Birmingham City on a free transfer this summer, then turned from provider to scorer as he bagged Rangers' second.

Lewis Mayo, Sheyi Ojo and Jermain Defoe added three more in the second-half as the Scottish side romped home to victory. Steven Gerrard will be happy with his side's start to pre-season, and will be hoping that they can battle for silverware once again this campaign.
