The Saints went in leading 1-0 at half-time, but despite being ahead, Puel was not satisfied with his side's performance in the first 45 minutes.
"I think our first half was very difficult, it wasn't good football for us," the Frenchman told 'Sky Sports'. "It was important to correct this".
However, the new Southampton boss revealed his delight at the team's improvement in the second half.
"You can see a good team in the second half, many chances. It was a game of two faces. We lost the ball [in the first half], we were not patient and it was difficult to put the ball on the ground. We didn't respect our game," he added.
"It was very interesting to see the correction from my players. I'm very happy for them".
The result heaped more misery on West Ham who have now lost four consecutive games in the Premier League and have a dismal defensive record, having conceded 11 goals in the last three games, something with Hammers captain Mark Noble called "laughable".
