In a game that showed why UEFA sought to bring in competitive matches to replace dead rubber friendlies, 50,000 fans at the Silesian Stadium were treated to a five goal thriller on Thursday night.
Robert Lewandowksi was celebrating the occasion of his 100th cap, however he was unfortunately left as a peripheral figure on his big night.
Although Portugal attacked from the beginning, with Joao Cancelo threatening down the right hand side from the first minute to the last, it was Poland that took the lead.
Krzystztof Piatek continued his phenomenal early season form, the Serie A top scorer scored his first international goal, rising highest from a dangerous corner to nod in.
Goalkeeper Rui Patricio's appeals for a foul fell on deaf ears and Poland led.
However this would only last until the 32nd minute. Static defending from Poland left Andre Silva completely unmarked in the middle and after neat interplay involving Cancelo freed Pizzi on the right the striker couldn't miss.
Scoring in his second consecutive international game, he tucked it past Fabianksi with ease.
By now Portugal were firmly on top and they continued to threaten with their lively front three, which contained three Silvas- Rafa, Andre and Bernardo.
It did not take them long to complete the turn around. Three minutes before half time a phenomenal pass from Ruben Neves found Rafa Silva in behind and the Benfica man's lovely first touch took him past the 'keeper.
Kamil Glik, caught out for the first goal was desperate to atone for his error and made a sliding tackle on the forward. However the intervention saw the ball trickle into the net, the own goal making it 2-1.
Portugal showed no signs of letting off at the beginning of the second half, and they quickly made it three.
The goal was down in equal measure to brilliance from Bernardo Silva to work the space for shot and the haplessness of Fabianski in letting the weak strike squeeze through him and into the net.
From here Portugal looked to be controlling the game and in charge, but this would all change in the 77th minute. Jakub Błaszczykowski scored a fantastic goal to bring his side back into the game.
The Wolfsburg man unleashed a spectacular angled volley after fellow substitute Kamil Grosicki's cross had come off Lewandowski in the middle.
Although Portugal appealed that the ball had gone out of play on the right hand side the goal was given and it looked like we were in for a photo finish.
However Portugal showed their class, controlling the ball and not conceding any real chances, they could even have had a fourth but substitute Renato Sanches saw a shot cleared off the line.
They really deserved to win by more, but the score made for very enjoyable viewing for a neutral.
