In the space of two years, Éder has gone from being the nation's hero to a being ousted from the squad. The forward will not travel to Russia this summer after not seeing his name appear on Fernando Santos' final 23-man squad.
On 10th July 2016, the Stade de France lit up when the host country, and clear favourites, France took on Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in the final of the Euros. Unfortunately for the Portuguese, their star man left the pitch in tears with an injury in the first half.
The whole affair swung in France's favour but they struggled to find a way past Rui Patricio between the sticks. Antoine Griezmann was gifted the best chances, but Portugal kept him off the score sheet and took the game to extra-time.
Until that point, Éder had just 11 minutes under his belt. Santos sent the striker onto the pitch to act as the target man, holding the ball up and feeding in his team-mates on the break.
Never a prolific goalscorer, Éder had six goals to his name that season shared between spells at Swansea and Lille. He stepped onto the pitch, and the rest is history.
On the stroke of the 109th minute, Éder controlled the ball in the opposition half and found himself with only French shirts in front of him. Far from goal, he caught Hugo Lloris by surprised with a early strike that rocketed into the bottom corner. His team-mates flocked around him to frantically celebrate before getting their heads down and seeing the game out. Now, Éder is but a forgotten hero.
