After the Portugal squad completed training yesterday in Oeiras near Lisbon, Soares told reporters: ''The national team is one where nobody's position is assured, aside from the best player in the world.''
The Southampton defender confirmed to the media that he will not be part of the starting lineup against Spain. Coach Fernando Santos has selected his starting XI for the first day of the World Cup, for the match in Sochi on 15th June.
Soares added that preparations for the tournament in Russia ''are going well'' and that the group is united. He once again sung Ronaldo's praises saying: ''We already have the best player in the world.''
The 26-year-old also noted that there is some anxiety among the ranks of the Portuguese team, something that the country's Prime Minister, Antonio Costa, addressed when he visited the players at training on Tuesday morning.
Costa said: ''Being reigning European champions is a responsibility, but it cannot be a burden, we have to enter the pitch with joy, we have plenty of reasons to go into the World Cup with optimism and confidence.''
Manager Santos had the whole compliment of his squad at training on Tuesday, barring Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva who was suffering from an upset stomach.
