Peru grabbed first 2018 World Cup goal with a screamer

They have played with passion and determination but this summer's tournament just hadn't gone Peru's way.

Defeats to Denmark and France meant the South American side were already eliminated going into their final group fixture against Australia on Tuesday afternoon.

They might just have had pride to play for but that didn't stop Peru displaying a spirited performance which saw them break the deadlock in the 18th minute.

Paolo Guerrero chased down a long ball before crossing to Carillo on the edge of the area. The winger caught the ball on the volley and struck a venomous shot that Matt Ryan could do nothing about as it flung into the back of the net.

The goal spells bad news for Australia who needed to record a win against Peru if they were to have any chance of qualifying for the Round of 16.
