According to 'The Daily Mail', Scholes had previously held talks with Oldham, but had turned down the move in order to continue other pursuits such as his role as a TV pundit . However, after negotiations recommenced in recent weeks, it appears that the Old Trafford icon is set to take his first steps into football management with the fourth tier club.
It is being rumoured that, bar any major last minute issues, the deal will be finalised within the next fortnight. It is thought that Scholes originally applied for the vacancy last year, before the role was eventually handed to Richie Wellens, although he has continued to follow the progress of the club, and is aware of the problems that he will need to address when he takes the reigns.
One potential future issue for Scholes' involvement with Oldham is his co-ownership of conference side Salford City. The ambitious outfit, backed by Singaporean Businessman Peter Lim, could potentially get promoted to the same league as Oldham come the end of the season. In the case that this does happen, the former United midfielder would have to consider dropping his interest in the club.
Should Scholes indeed take charge of Oldham, he will be joining former England colleague Sol Campbell, who also manages in League Two with Macclesfield Town.
