One year since Atletico humiliated Real Madrid

It is clear that pre-seasons game, however attractive they are, have no bearing on what will happen that season. One year ago on 26th July 2019 night, 27th morning, Atletico Madrid thrashed Real Madrid in New Jersey. 

The two teams were playing in a derby in the USA in the International Champions Cup, but it was one way traffic. 

Atletico Madrid crushed Real 7-3 and they were 5-0 up at half-time. Later on, Real Madrid added some respectability to the scoreline. 

Inside the first minute, Diego Costa made it 1-0 Atletico. Joao Felix and Correa also scored inside the first 20 minutes. Diego Costa then completed his hat-trick before the interval,. 

Costa got his fourth in the second half, Nacho opened Real Madrid's account and then Vitolo added a seventh for Simeone's men with 20 minutes left. 

Then, both teams were reduced to ten men following a fight. Carvajal and Diego Costa both saw red. Both could have scored more, but Real Madrid pulled a couple of more goals back through Benzema and Javi Hernandez in the last 10 minutes. They were beaten 7-3. 

However, 'Los Blancos' took the revenge during the season. Real Madrid beat them in the Spanish Super Cup final and Zidane's men also won the league. Both clubs are still in the Champions League, but Real are in a difficult position in their last 16 tie.
