Olympiakos went into the game needing to win by two clear goals, something which seemed more than a little bit unlikely against seven-time European champions Milan.
However, Pape Abou cCsse's headed opener on the hour mark raised hopes that the Greeks could do the improbable and those hopes were only raised further nine minutes later as Cristian Zapata dramatically put through his own net to give the home side the two-goal advantage they so desperately needed.
The game continued at a frenetic pace as Zapata bundled in a goal at the right end just 110 seconds later, goal-line technology showing his effort had indeed crossed the line despite the best efforts of Jose Sa.
Nevertheless, there was to be one last twist in the tail as Ignazio Abate conceded a penalty 10 minutes from time, with midfielder Konstantinos Fortounis keeping his cool to convert from the spot and send 'Thrylos' through to the Round of 32 on goal difference.
That meant Milan exited at the Group Stage of a European competition since the 2000/01 Champions League.
The Rossoneri's shock exit is likely only to increase the pressure on manager Gennaro Gattuso, with the club also performing inconsistently in the league as they sit 17 points behind leaders Juventus in fourth.
