Real Madrid's worst fears have been confirmed. Kylian Mbappe will not be a Real Madrid player next season. The 23 year-old has announced that he has decided to renew at PSG with just over a month left on his contract. The annoucement came shortly before the final game of the season against Metz.
Kylian Mbappe had been linked with a move away from PSG for months and he had put off signing a new deal at the French giants. Real Madrid were always the most likely candidates and even Liverpool were mentioned as a possible destination for Mbappe. Furthermore, PSG's failure once again to win the Champions League led to many believing the Frenchman would depart.
In fact, earlier in the week, there was talk of Madrid reaching an agreement with the French striker and that there was no way back. However, Mbappe's mother, Fayza Lamari, revealed in an interview with 'Kora Plus' that her son had "almost identical" agreements with both PSG and Real Madrid and that it was just for Kylian to decide. In the end, PSG have won the battle thanks to a multi-million euro renewal bonus and salary.
Real Madrid were left bewildered by Mbappe's sudden change of heart and according to journalist Guillem Balague, president Florentino Perez informed the squad that Mbappe would not be joining the club after the goalless draw with Real Betis on Friday night.
This is the second time Madrid have missed out on a big signing after seeing how Erling Haaland struck a deal with Man City earlier in May. It remains to be seen who Real Madrid decide to go for now after missing out on Kylian Mbappe, who has 168 goals in 216 PSG appearances, at least for this summer.
In any case, Madrid can end the campaign on a high if they defeat Liverpool in the Champions League final in Paris on 28th May. Victory there would see them lift their third trophy of the season after the La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup.
