Villarreal continue to make moves in this transfer window. The 'Yellow Submarine' announced a new departure, this time that of Jorge Cuenca. The Spanish defender, a key player in the starting eleven last season, has decided to embark on a new challenge in English football.
Fulham, who had been negotiating with the Spaniard for some time, finally managed to close the transfer of the defender on Saturday. The Cottagers announced with great fanfare the signing of the Madrid-born player, who signs until 2028 with an option to extend his contract for another year.
"The Club is delighted to confirm the signing of Jorge Cuenca from Villarreal for an undisclosed fee. The defender has agreed a four-year deal, keeping him at Craven Cottage until the summer of 2028, with a Club option to extend by a further year. Cuenca, 24, primarily operates as a left-sided centre-half, but has also lined up at left-back on numerous occasions for Villarreal," said Fulham in their statement.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the deal is worth around 7 million euros plus variables. This move generates extra income for Barcelona, who sold Jorge Cuenca to Villarreal. The Catalan giants reserved 20% of a future transfer and will take approximately 1.4 million euros.
The Madrid native thus puts an end to a four-season spell with the 'Yellow Submarine', who acquired his services in September 2020 for 2.5 million plus four million in variables. Villareal loaned Jorge Cuenca to Almeria for 2020-21 and to Getafe for 2021-22. In his two seasons with the 'Groguet' first team he has played 60 games, scoring 3 goals and providing 1 assist.
