OFFICIAL: Courtois wins Yashin trophy

Thibaut Courtois has won the Yashin trophy for best goalkeeper in the same awards ceremony which saw the Ballon d'Or awarded in Paris.

The 30 year-old beat nine other contenders for the award after having a tremendous season for 'Los Blancos'. For the first time, the prize was awarded based on the season (2021-22) rather than a calendar year. The winner is decided after votes from football journalists as well as coaches and capitains of national teams.

The Belgian is the third person to win the award after Liverpool's Alisson in 2019 and PSG and Italy's Gianluigi Donnarumma in 2021. Courtois' tremendous saves helped Real Madrid win La Liga and the Champions League last season. 

Despite football being a team game and the fact Karim Benzema was easily Madrid's best player last season, Courtois never let his team down and was a calming influence at the back.
