OFFICIAL: Bayern Munich sign Koln goalkeeper Jonas Urbig

Bayern Munich reinforced their goalkeeper position on Monday with a surprising move. The Bavarian club announced the signing of Jonas Urbig, a burly 21-year-old goalkeeper, 1'89 meters tall, who trained in the Köln youth academy and was still with the Rhein-Energie-Stadion team.

Urbig, an international with the German U21 national team, started this season as a starter for his former club, but lost his starting place after 11 games (22 goals conceded). He had previously played 17 games for Jahn Regensburg in 2022-23 (28 goals conceded) and 34 more for Greuther Furth in 2023-24 (48 goals conceded), all on loan from Koln.

The Munich team, which already had Daniel Peretz from Israel in their ranks, thus incorporates a new young and promising goalkeeper who could in the future aspire to take the place that Manuel Neuer has been occupying in recent years at Bayern.

As his new club points out, he stands out for his great reflexes, but he is also a goalkeeper who has good footwork, an aspect to which he could be compared to Manuel Neuer. He excels with a high passing rate and at Greuther Fürth he stood out for his ability to cut out opposition attacks from outside the box.

“I'm proud of myself. My time here has just begun and I'm already looking forward to getting to know the guys and the club's employees,” young Jonas Urbig told the club's official media at his presentation.

“He is a modern goalkeeper, very good on the ball and also very good under the posts. He has great potential and that's why we are very happy that he has decided to join Bayern,” added Max Eberl, the Bavarian club's sporting director, at the welcome ceremony for the former Köln player.
