OFFICIAL: Atletico Madrid break the bank for Man City's Julian Alvarez

Julian Alvarez has become Atletico Madrid's top summer signing. The Argentinian arrives from Manchester City after Robin Le Normand and Alexander Sorloth joined the club earlier in the season.

The Argentinian striker signs until 2030 with the red and white team and, although none of the parties have confirmed the figures, Fabrizio Romano advanced last Tuesday the figures of the transfer. Atletico will pay 75 million fixed plus a further 20 million in variable payments for the Cityzens forward.

Manchester City gave the go-ahead to the 'Colchoneros' proposal and Julian Alvarez then agreed to the personal terms of his contract. According to the aforementioned source, the Spanish club guaranteed that they would take 100% of his image rights.

As a result, Julian Alvarez will not have to meet Pep Guardiola again after the words they exchanged this summer. The footballer said that, when the Olympics were over, he needed to think about what he wanted for his future, a message that did not sit too well with the man from Santpedor, who replied: "Let him think and then inform us". 

The player, surprised by the City coach's reaction, settled the controversy by explaining his position and arguing that he did not say anything wrong. Shortly afterwards, the manager asked him to rest and that, when he was 100 per cent, he would count on him for the 2024-25 season, although in the end he will not have to play under him again.

It was Guardiola himself who announced his signing on Friday. "He wants to go to Atletico, that's fine. There is no problem, it's a great club and we wish him all the best," said the coach.

The 24-year-old striker is starting a new journey in La Liga. Julian Alvarez made a name for himself at River Plate, where he had his best season in 2020-21, with 26 goals and 16 assists.

In the summer of 2022, the Mancunian side knocked on his door and he made the big leap to the Premier League, where he has spent the last two seasons. In the first, he scored 17 goals and provided four assists. In the second, he scored 19 goals and almost tripled his assists compared to the previous year with a total of 13. 

City have made the most of Julian Alvarez, for whom they paid around 21.4 million euros to River Plate. Now they see him leave the Etihad Stadium leaving their coffers well and truly full. For their part, Atletico are confident that the Argentinian will prove that he is worth every single euro invested and give the red-and-white fans plenty of joy.
