Neymar reportedly has suffered a sprained ankle as well as an injury to the fifth metatarsal and this news means he will definitely sit out the match between PSG and Real Madrid next week. He suffered the injury after an innocuous looking fall during the match against Marseille last weekend.
However, it has been reported that Neymar was not willing to compromise his chances of playing at the World Cup, despite PSG insisting he could play against Real, so this should come as good news to Brazil fans, as their player will likely only face six weeks out.
There had been some conflict between the player and the club. It was reported that the player wanted to have the surgery immediately, to give maximum recovery time. However, there is believed to be a clause in his contract which gives PSG the final word on all medical decisions. The club have stressed that this was a joint decision taken in agreement by both parties.
Neymar has scored 29 goals in 30 games so far this season as PSG sit atop Ligue 1. Julian Draxler and Angel di Maria will be the players in line to replace him.
In a statement the club said: "After an initial treatment period of three days inline with a strict medical protocol, a joint decision has been taken between the medical staffs of both Paris Saint-Germain and the Brazil national team.
"In accordance with the player, it has been decided that Neymar Jr will undergo surgery in Brazil at the end of this week. He will be operated on by Dr. Rodrigo Lasmar, accompanied by Professor Saillant, representing PSG."
