The fee may increase to £4m, should Newcastle win promotion and the Irishman has signed a two-year deal with the Magpies.
Murphy made 225 appearances for Ipswich, scoring 67 goals and also has 23 caps for the Republic of Ireland.
Upon signing for the Magpies, Murphy said: "I'm absolutely delighted to get it over the line and I'm really looking forward to it," said Murphy.
"When I knew the club was interested, it was a no-brainer for me so I'm happy it's all done".
Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez then added: "He gives us another option in attack and we could see from this weekend's game against Brighton that we needed more bodies up front.
"Daryl has a good attitude and he can be very important for us this season".
