The search is set to start for a replacement for the 27-year-old Dutch goalkeeper, and it has been claimed by British newspaper 'Daily Star' that Newcastle have identified out-of-favour Manchester United goalkeeper Victor Valdes to fill the void.
In recent weeks both Chelsea and Liverpool have been linked with the Spanish keeper, but Louis van Gaal has been unwilling to allow Valdes to join other Premier League rivals.
It has been clear from the start of the season that the ex Barcelona star has been surplus to requirements at Manchester United, with the playing being omitted from their Champions League campaign, and has been told that he is no longer part of the first-team squad.
But it came to light that Van Gaal does not want a domestic rival to benefit from his services and would only agree to terminate his contract if he moved away from the Premier League, however with Krul's ruptured ligament it leaves Steve McClaren with a serious headache as he only has thrid-choice keeper Rob Elliot available.
