The Super League was halted weeks after its launch. Many actors, including FIFA and UEFA, did not like it because it was restricted to the most powerful clubs and it threatened the existence of the Champions League. But that could now changes.
'A22 Sports', the company which develops the project, announced certain changes to the Super League to newspaper 'El Pais'. The first and most important change is that it will be an open competition.
The founding members of the Super League, Barca, Real Madrid and Juventus, have reportedly contacted 50 European clubs. They have been told that the idea is for the tournament to have between 60 and 80 clubs.
'El Pais' reports that Barca, Real Madrid and Juventus are the ones wo are still fully behind the project. They also say that Atletico Madrid, Man City, Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham, Inter Milan and AC Milan "have still not contractually left the project."
With this new model, the Super League would guarantee each club a minimum of 14 matches. In the Champions League, those who reach the final play just 13 matches.
This project has come about, according to 'A22 Sports', because of the economic crisis as well as the need to self-govern because right now, Champions League prize money is distributed by UEFA.
And Bernd Reichart, CEO of 'A22 Sports', said that "inflated sponsorships" would be banned to make sure clubs stuck to financial rules.
The Super League is currently on hold. Right now, they are waiting for the European Court of Justice to comment. Not long back, the EU's general lawyer issued a report against the Super League, but the European Court of Justice's verdict could be different. That will come in spring.
